Mercury Cars win The South Yorkshire Business Premiership Title – Spring/Summer 06
19 Jul 2006
Last night (18th July) saw Mercury Cars crowned as South Yorkshire Business Premiership champions in their first ever season, with Allied Glazing FC taking the runners up spot!
In a thrilling finale, the race for the title came down to the very last match of the season. Allied Glazing and Mercury Cars were separated by just two points at the top of the table with Allied Glazing sitting on top spot at the start of the night. The fixture list had thrown up a last night decider with Allied Glazing and Mercury Cars playing each other, both knowing a win would give them the title. In a tense match it was Mercury Cars who snatched victory and the title with an 8-4 win.
It capped a fantastic first season for Mercury Cars who, after a shaky first few weeks, had strung 10 straight wins together to take the title. It was without question a fantastic team effort lead by team captain Tariq Nazir and with the fire power of Taf Shabir - who smashed in a fantastic 32 goals – Mercury Cars are deserved champions of the Spring/Summer 2006 season!

It was heart break for Allied Glazing who had lead for most of the season, but having been twice runners up and once winners in the three seasons they have competed - it is a record to be proud of and they will no doubt be looking to retain the title again next season. BSJ Wrights finished a respectable third place and Summer 2005 champions, Carcraft FC, in fourth.

The race for the golden boot also came down to the last night of the season and was between Mercury Car’s Tariq Nazir and Carcraft hotshot Mark Kitridge, who had a two goal advantage going into the last night. Both players kept up their petition for the golden boot during their final matches -firing in four goals each. This eventually meant the golden boot went to Martin Kitridge from Carcraft FC. It was well deserved as Martin has been a consistent goal scorer over the four seasons Carcraft have competed in the league. His 34 goals this season gives him an all time record of 84 goals!
Martin Kitridge - 34 goals!
Mercury Cars capped a memorable night as they also picked up the golden glove award with a record of only 33 goals conceded over the season.
